On July 2, 1974, to be exact, Matilda Bitterseed made a decision which would possibly alter the course of her love life!
Matilda Bitterseed was lonely, and she was looking for love.
Matilda decided to write a letter, and send it off in a bottle, which she would place in the waters of Lake Harriet, in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she had lived all of her life.
Matilda carefully wrote out her letter before placing it in a bottle, filled partially with sand.
Once the letter was finished, Matilda inserted the letter into just the right sized bottle and then pushed down on a cork to seal the bottle up tight.
“I hope someone wonderful finds this bottle with my letter in it!” declared Matilda!
Then Matilda rolled the bottle on to it’s side as she waited for the right moment to place the bottle in the water.
Matilda, unfortunately, was under the mistaken notion that Lake Harriet emptied out into the ocean and that her letter would be carried far far away.
Matilda Bitterseed never gave up hope that one day she would spot a red ribbon high up in a tree and meet the bird she was destined to spend her life with.
One year after Matilda wrote her letter and placed it in the waters of Lake Harriet...a local fisherman happened to catch a large Northern Pike fish, which he brought home to eat.
When gutting the fish, the fisherman was astonished to discover a bottle in the belly of the fish, which had a note in it!
The fisherman read Matilda's note and it touched his heart SO much that he tied a red ribbon to the very top of a tree in his yard.
Matilda never saw the fisherman's red ribbon because exactly six months, after sending off her note in a bottle, she met a handsome bird whose name was Freddie Gillstrap, who just happened to have a red ribbon in his beak, which he was bringing home from the ribbon factory where he worked!
Matilda met Freddie while flying through Greece and the two of them fell madly in love and Matilda lived happily ever after.
