Hatch Nesterson's lifelong dream was to provide a means of transportation for birds that, for whatever reason, had trouble flying.
In 1976, Hatch Nesterson, designed the first ever, airborne, rickshaw.
Hatch Nesterson and his partner, Spiroleana McFeather, spent months of intense preparation time, fine tuning every aspect of the flying rickshaw.
Rigorous and detailed examinations were also made by various city inspectors before the airborne rickshaw could take on passengers.
City and county inspectors alike, felt that the flying rickshaw met all bird safety requirements. They completely backed Hatch Nesterson's dream and gave Hatch the go-ahead to launch his flying rickshaw!
Otis Chirp was the sole financial backer of the flying rickshaw and declared that the bird flying rickshaw service should officially be named, "Rickshaw Air"!
It was determined that the younger bird passengers would be required to sit in the main basket of the rickshaw for safety.
Unfortunately the flying rickshaw was not successful.
Today the airborne rickshaw is no longer in existence. Only a handful of photographs exist to commemorate the memory of a long gone era in the bird travelling community.
Hatch Nesterson had invested his entire savings into his dream of transporting birds from place to place in his flying rickshaw.
His hope was that he could help fly elderly birds, fledgling birds and injured birds from place to place.
One particular critic of Hatch's flying rickshaw was quoted as saying..."If the bird who is actually 'flying' the rickshaw were to become incapacitated for any reason, the lives of the other birds seated on the rickshaw would be in immediate peril."
